Brief description

In this module, a print medium on a specific topic is designed and implemented as part of a practical project accompanied by a seminar. The format (e.g. magazine, poster series), the printing technique and the content of the medium are specified at the beginning of the module. In particular, innovative and experimental design methods and forms of communication are to be researched in practice.

Teaching and learning outcomes

  • Magazine design, Poster design
  • Layout systems, Grid systems
  • Selection and use of design elements (colors, shapes, structures, patterns), images (graphics, illustrations, photos) and fonts
  • Technical requirements for templates for the creation of print products

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Recommended prior knowledge

Basic design knowledge

Knowledge Broadening

The students who successfully completed this module possess extensive knowledge of the scientifically sound principles of editorial design and poster design. They have basic knowledge of the technical requirements of printing templates.

Knowledge deepening

The students who successfully completed this module understand the development of layout and grid systems. They know the elements of editorial design and recognize their functions. They are aware of the cognitive psychological effect of design means of print products.

Knowledge Understanding

The students who successfully completed this module analyze and evaluate style, character and quality of editorial designs and poster designs. They develop layout and grid systems for brochures and magazines. They design articles with graphical and textual elements. They develop and implement communication concepts for posters. They develop technically well executed printing templates.

Application and Transfer

The students who successfully completed this module develop brochures, magazines and posters with methods that are typical of the design profession. They adapt the methods to the respective requirements of the design task.

Academic Innovation

The students who have successfully studied this module develop innovative design solutions for brochures, magazines and posters by using their methodological repertoire in a target group-oriented and diverse manner.

Communication and Cooperation

The students who successfully completed this module analyze and evaluate the impact of editorial design and poster design. They give reason for decisions in regards to their design of brochures, magazines and posters in a scientifically sound matter. They present editorial designs and poster designs which are developed by themselves to different target groups in a in a comprehensible matter.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

The students who have successfully completed this module recognize the influence of their creative work on society and culture and reflect on their personal responsibility.
