Brief description

The module provides an overview and understanding of the significance of the EU as a supranational organisation and its interaction with the member states in law, politics and economics, including vis-à-vis third countries.

Teaching and learning outcomes

Process of European integration - Institutional framework of the EU - Budget of the EU - European legal order - Fundamental freedoms of the internal market - Policies of the EU (Common Agricultural Policy, Competition rules, Approximation of laws, European Company Law, Fiscal rules, Economic and Monetary Union, Common Commercial Policy, development cooperation, environmental and climate protection, common transport policy, trans-European networks, consumer protection, social and employment policy, structural policy, education and culture, research policy, visa and immigration policy, police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters, common foreign and security policy).

Knowledge Broadening

Students who have successfully studied this module have a broad and integrated knowledge of the European Union system. They understand how the European Union affects action in the public sector and the state acting in the economic sphere, including municipalities.

Knowledge deepening

n particular, they understand the past and possible future process of European integration, the structure of the European Union and the fundamental freedoms of the internal market. They have knowledge of the most important European policy areas.

Application and Transfer

Graduates are able to understand the activities of the EU in their working environment, to assess them scientifically and to incorporate them correctly and meaningfully in the fulfilment of their tasks.

Academic Innovation

Graduates identify and formulate research questions regarding the activities of the EU and are able to solve them using scientific instruments.

Communication and Cooperation

They are able to communicate these issues to staff and supervisors in their future professional field.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Graduates of this module recognise the framework conditions of the EU for their actions in a situation-adequate way, can critically question them and use leeway sensibly.
