5G for energy grids
In the following years, there will be major developments in both mobile data transmission and in the environment of energy network operators. While the new communication standard 5G will increase transmission speed and decrease latency, requirements of the energy network will dramatically change as well. With electric cars and a higher proportion of renewable energy sources like photovoltaic or wind energy, there will be decentralized and unpredictable energy generation and consumption.
The project “5G for Energy Verticals” is carried out with an industrial cooperation. As part of the project, the effect of new and existing wireless communication technologies on current and incoming business cases will be examined. Thought a communication interface multiple prosumers will be able to communicate to increase the stability and capacity of the energy network. Furthermore, we will explore the possibility to implement real-time control for substations and video-based control for drones using 5G.
